Wolves Open Season With Loss Friday Against Colstrip Colts

The Wolf Point Wolves football team opened the 2010 season with a tough loss at home against the Colstrip Colts Friday night, Sept. 3.

After both teams got off to a slow start early in the game, it was the Colts who finally struck first and led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

But, in the second quarter, the Wolves made a few costly mistakes which led to two more Colstrip scores and the Colts led 21-0 at the half.

As Wolf Point's problems with scoring continued into the second half, the Colts’ defense shut them out yet in over the final two quarters to come away with the 33-0 victory.

“We felt we had a few chances to change the momentum of the game and put some points on the scoreboard. But, we couldn't capitalize on any

opportunities we had. We talked a lot about not beating ourselves,” said head coach R.C. Page.

Page noted, “Colstrip has a great team this year and we wish them the best of luck in their season. They have a lot of returning players on offensive and defensive line and have some big strong kids.”

The Wolves now have to regroup in practice and focus on preparing for the next game and try to put this loss behind them.

Some offensive standouts for the game were Jes Hanks as he rushed nine times for 55 yards. Blair Dorner had 11 for 47 yards and Josh Flaten had four for 19 yards.

As quarterback, Easton Copenhaver completed five of 15 passes for 68 yards while Dorner had three catches for 53 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Hanks had five tackles and one interception. Hanks was second team All-Conference last year, noted Page.

Ryan Reese and Ethan Sorley each had 10 tackles. Codie Masterson also added eight tackles.

Dorner and Masterson each recovered a fumble.

The team totals had 132 rush yards, 68 pass yards for a total of 200 yards for the Wolves.

“We need to have 300 yards on offense to be successful,” said Page. “We didn’t have any big plays in the game — we’ve got to have some big plays to be successful.”

After the loss, the Wolves will have to regroup in a hurry as they prepare to go on the road this weekend when they travel to Baker to take on a very tough Spartan team. The Spartans are a very good football team every year. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 10.
