Influenza activity in Montana is now declared to be widespread. The primary influenza virus that is causing illness in the state is 2009 H1N1.  For Daniels County, in the past week there have been two cases of laboratory confirmed 2009 H1N1 influenza illness with several other people having flu like illness. Neither person with confirmed 2009 H1N1 influenza required hospitalization.
If you become ill with flu like symptoms including a fever take care of yourself at home. You should stay home from work, school, travel, shopping, social events, church and other public gatherings until your fever has been gone for at least 24 hours. The only exception to this rule is if you need to get medical care.
Avoid close contact with others, especially those who might easily get the flu such as people with chronic illness, pregnant women, young children and infants. Clean your hands often. Cover you cough. Drink plenty of fluids. Get plenty of rest.
Generally, symptoms have been mild but if you have difficulty breathing, complain of chest pain, or have other symptoms that make you think your illness is getting worse seek medical attention immediately.
Daniels County has received about 100 doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine. This is being offered to healthcare workers, child care workers, pregnant women and young children. At this time, there are no public clinics planned.
For more information about 2009 H1N1 either go to www.flu.gov or call Daniels County Health Department at 487-5560.
