Mickey Whitlow1930-2009
Mickey (Randolph) Whitlow was born in June of 1930 at South Boston, Virginia. He passed away while resting at their home in Green Valley, Arizona September 19 at the age of 79.
He received his formative schooling in Virginia, then joined the Air Force in 1947, serving for three years stationed in Spokane, WA. That is where he met and married his wife, Ada Mae Tonjum, in 1949.
They moved to Scobey in 1950 where he and Ada took over the Tonjum family farm south of Four Buttes and raised their family.
After farming for 25 years, Mickey opened a Butler business franchise in 1961 selling and erecting grain bins and agricultural and commercial steel buildings. In 1970 he expanded their operations by buying two bowling alleys, one in Scobey and one in Crosby. The Scobey alley was one of his favorite enterprises as he could visit, cook, play cards and give all a “bad time.”
Mickey and Ada moved to Glasgow in 1975 where the Butler business had been centrally located and they lived there 23 years. He was very active over the years working with organizations and serving on various boards.
After 49 years of the snowy, cold winters, they moved to Green Valley, AZ in the spring of 1998. They came back to celebrate their 50th anniversary in Scobey; this past May they celebrated their 60th in Green Valley.
Mickey was a passionate man in his giving, encouragement, willingness to lend a hand and hospitality. He was active in his church, including missions and the Gideons. He was a volunteer during baseball’s spring training which, next to playing, was a dream come true.
Survivors include his wife, Ada; children Randy (Laurie) of Reno, Cathy of Green Valley, Gene of Green Valley, and Terry (Christy) of Colorado Springs; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; a brother and 2 sisters.
A memorial service will be at the Evangelical Church, 152 Aberdeen St. in Glasgow on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 11:00 a.m.
