On Wednesday August  12th the first construction activities began on Dry Prairie’s first phase of construction in Valley County. A Carstensen Contracting crew began trenching distribution pipelines about 5 miles south of

Glasgow. The following day an excavation (backhoe) crew began north of Glasgow, followed by another trenching crew, also north of Glasgow.
This first phase consists of about 100 miles of pipeline ranging in size from 12” to 1.5” in diameter.
When completed, the new lines will supply the Town of Nashua and over 200 rural services in southern Valley County with treated drinking water from the MARCO water facilities at St Marie. These facilities will be used until water is available from the regional treatment plant under construction near Wolf Point
Carstensen was previously awarded the Culbertson to Medicine Lake Mainline Project. That project, built in 2004, connected the towns of Froid and Medicine Lake to the Culbertson water treatment plant with 14” pipeline.
The Valley County project will utilize two excavation crews and two trenching crews along with a roadway and river boring crew for a total of 5 crews. Boring is a method of construction that allows roadways, streams and railroads to be undisturbed by construction activities.
All crews should be working by the end of August. The pipe is jointed PVC in lengths of 20 ft - for larger diameter pipe - and 40 ft lengths for 8” sizes and less, and will be buried to a minimum depth of 7 feet.
Later this fall the crews will begin installing the service lines and meter pits into   rural yards. It is the user’s responsibility to install – or have installed - the last 30 to 100 feet of line that connects the meter pit to a residence or other point of use. Local contractors will be utilized to construct these connections to the points of use by the customer.
