The Wolf Point Wolves’ cross country team traveled to Poplar to kick off the season at the Poplar Invitational, Aug. 31.
Teams from Culbertson, Glasgow, Poplar, Wolf Point, Brockton, Frazer, Malta and Williston, N.D., competed in the meet.
In the varsity boys’ race, Wolves’ runners Connor McCoy and Markell Blount finished sixth and seventh respectively, in the hilly course just north of the BIA/tribal building. McCoy completed the three-mile course in 20:11 while Blount finished in 20:20 for the first meet of the season.
In the junior high boys’ race, Wolf Point's Brandon Hapa led the way for the Wolves with a fifth-place finish over the 1.5-mile course with a time of 10:27.
Trey Fourstar finished in sixth place, 10:52 while teammate Demarco Lilley was 19th in 12:54. Caleb Blount finished 21st in 13:14. Jerek Summers rounded out the finishers for Wolf Point in 26th place, 15:42.
In the junior high girls’ race, Sierra Summers finished in first in 9.40. Journey Erickson finished sixth in 11:22 while her teammate Cyreena Standing finished eighth in 11:40. Alex Sutton rounded out the scoring for the Wolves, finishing in 22nd place with a time of 16:44.
The top 10 finishers in each race received ribbons.
“It was a good first race considering the season just started and many of the kids are rounding into running shape,” said coach Stacey Summers.
The next race of the season is in Wolf Point Sept. 7 with a 10 a.m. start time.
