Mildred Sunwall, 83, formerly of Froid, died March 17, 2013, in Billings.
Born Feb. 6, 1929, on the family farm in Froid, she was the youngest of the 13 children of Anders and Margarethe Sunwall.
She attended Zich School and Froid Public Schools before going to high school at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn., where she graduated in 1948. She earned her RN at Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minn.
Although she lived much of her life in Montana, her inquisitive spirit, love of travel and passion for nursing took her on adventures across the United States and to Africa and Europe. She worked at Deaconess Hospital in Billings until retiring in 1994.
In 2009, she and her sister Elvina moved from their home in Billings into Aspen Meadows.
When it came to favorite places, Montana’s mountains and countryside topped her list. She traveled the breadth of Montana visiting Glacier Park repeatedly, vacationing in the Beartooth Mountains and exploring many small towns and natural areas across this vast state. She enjoyed crafts, needlework, music, art and reading and was very proud of her home town of Billings — its cultural offerings, restaurants and the view from the rims. She loved beauty wherever she found it — in gardening, interior decorating, baking and nature. An avid daily reader of the Billings Gazette, she kept up on local and world events.
She attended Billings Bible Church and Yellowstone Lutheran Brethren Church. Her deep faith in Christ, love for family and generosity touched many lives.
She is survived by her sister, Elvina Sunwall of Billings.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Nils, Esther, Alma (Sunwall) Thompson, Philip, Kaleb, Thelma (Sunwall) Erickson, Aril, Ruth, Miriam (Sunwall) Erickson, Leif and Samuel.
Her memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 4, at Michelotti-Sawyer Funeral Home in Billings. Her ashes will be interred at Sunset Memorial Gardens following the service.
