City To Crack Down On Property Violations

The City of Wolf Point is cracking down on code enforcement to tackle blighted areas in the community.


Over the past month, the Wolf Point Police Department has mailed “notices of prohibited conditions” to numerous residents and property owners as part of an initiative to improve the appearance of the Wolf Point community. The initiative aims to identify blighted and dangerous properties in the city as well as encourage property owners to clean up their businesses and homes.

 

“There are properties in our community that need to be picked up and cleaned up. Residents and property owners need to address properties that have tall grass and weeds and trash and just, generally, are an eyesore,” said Wolf Point Police Lt. Brian Erwin.

Prohibited conditions are conditions that do not comport with a safe, clean, orderly, sanitary and aesthetic condition and include:

•Buildings which are abandoned, boarded up, partially destroyed or partially constructed or uncompleted buildings after building permits have expired.

•Improperly maintained landscaping which is visible from streets.

•Overgrown vegetation exceeding a height of eight inches or more, or which is unsightly and likely to harbor rats or vermin.

•Dead, decayed, or diseased trees, weeds and other vegetation.

•Trash, garbage or refuse cans, bins, boxes or other such containers stored in the front or side yards visible from public streets and rear yards.

•Lumber, junk, trash, debris or salvage materials maintained upon any premises which are visalley or adjoining property.

•Abandoned, discarded or unused furniture, stoves, sinks, toilets, cabinets or other household fixtures or equipment stored so as to be visible from a public, street, alley or adjoining property.

•Abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, or inoperative automobiles, trailers, campers, boats and other motor vehicles which are accumulated or stored in yards.

•The accumulation of dirt, litter, or debris in vestibules, doorways on the premises or adjoining walkways.

•Mounds of soil, dry grass, weeds, dead trees, tin cans, abandoned asphalt or concrete, rubbish, refuse or waste or other unsanitary material of any kind.

•Building exteriors, walls, fences, driveways or walkways which are broken, defective, deteriorated, in disrepair or defaced due to any writing, inscription, scratch or graffiti.

•Any unsightly, partly completed or partly destroyed buildings, structures or improvements in the city which endanger or injure neighboring properties or the public health, safety or general welfare.

Upon receiving notice, residents and/or property owners will have 10 days to address the violation. Failure to do so could result in a fine up to $500 or six months in jail.
